Lisa E in Paul the Male Matchmaker, ep. 2

So Lisa Edelstein had a guest starring role in the silly Hulu tv show "Paul the Male Matchmaker," ep. 2. Here are a few quick screencaps:

Belated RIP House: incoming cars ≠ joke

House MD was wounded in 7x15 ("Bomb Shells") and came to an early end in 7x23 ("Moving On"). Today's announcement is but an official acknowledgement of what already happened last season. The show was in a coma, time to pull the plug. By the way, this is some evidence why the season 7 finale was no laughing matter to me and many other people:

Any more stupid questions?

My House rant on a Bones LJ community

In a "Bones" LJ community, a writer whose fanfic ("Luckiest Man Alive") I commented upon asked xxxx. This was my answer:

"House TPTB destroyed the show. I'm not even watching this season anymore. Their ratings are sinking like a stone. Basically, some of the suits from NBCU, Fox and/or TPTB demanded Lisa Edelstein ("Lisa Cuddy") to take what amounted to about a 50% pay cut for her new contract, that's besides some other rumored crap (LE is too classy to sling mud). So she called their bluff and quit.
But even before this happened way late in the 7th season (weird how such a worldwide hit show was allowed to hang in the lurch so long contract-wise), they first got House together with Cuddy, the love of his life, the only woman able and willing to put up with him. They then proceeded to mostly reduce this intriguing, interesting relationship to a level of pettiness and shallowness that made no sense considering their shared 20-year history. Mid season, they produced a gimmicky episode with lots of fancy production values but an improbable plot leading to Cuddy dumping House. Next, they had House turn into a vindictive, mean character w/o anything redeeming left: he marries a mail-order Russian bride in front of Cuddy and in the season finale he drove his car into Cuddy's house, only narrowly missing killing her and 3 guests. Then he fled to Fiji, episode ending with him sipping a cocktail on the beach. Lame TPTB excuse upon the enormous backlash: he had checked that Cuddy & co. stepped out of the living room and knew her little daughter wasn't home, really, so he wasn't trying to kill her! The facts of the episode did not support this.
This season, they just dropped a line about Cuddy having taken another job and that was it. A pivotal character implausibly shoved aside like trash, the last impression of Cuddy being that she, the victim of domestic abuse & murder attempt, ran away like a coward or like a woman should? (Show has bad track record of mistreating female characters) TPTB hadn't even thought about how the abuser, House, was going to be able to return: insignificant detail? If LE had stayed, she would've had to welcome her abuser with open arms back into the hospital, I suppose? Ludicrous. Insulting. Misogynist. TPTB scrambled and at least put House in jail in season 8, only to get out quickly and being back at the same hospital whose dean he tried to kill. Disgusting. TPTB darling Olivia Wilde ("Thirteen"), who was barely around in season 7 already, was allowed to leave for "her brilliant movie career," was only in 1 episode. So TPTB quickly hired 2 new actresses who are at best not very experienced (critics call them amateurs). One is a poor retread of Cameron/Thirteen/Cuddy, the other looks like Velma from Scooby-Doo and is underwhelming as a monotonous, weird overgrown teenager.
So yes, screw-up is too kind a word. Fiasco. Clusterfuck."

My thoughts on Lisa E 's new tweet and interview

I'd like to share my thoughts on Lisa Edelstein's recent communications. Her new interview in TV Guide and the new  twitter photo of her on David Shore's lap seem to me to be part of a concerted effort to address her fans regarding the rumors and theories circulating about her leaving House MD. A few points:
.
1) LE tells us to let go of our anger toward the House MD producers like DS, Katie Jacobs and Greg Yaitanes (TPTB proper, not TPTB in the larger sense, i.e, NBCU/Fox)
.
2) She doesn't deny that a pay cut played a part (rumored to have been 50% compared w season 7)
.
3) LE stresses that she was not fired. This probably means that an agreement on a new contract was not reached and her old contract was over, so technically she was free to leave, no "negative" action from NBCU/Fox
.
4) The way Cuddy's story ended on House MD is lousy which she hates. This is the only possible allusion to writing issues (inconsistencies w. both House & Cuddy's characters, shoddily-executed Huddy plot line)
.
5) She will not be back for even 1 episode. Why? As DS & Co. are friendly w. her, this leaves again NBCU/Fox as the likely culprits
.
6) Is NBCU, the studio, the problem? They initiated the heavy cost-cutting, even in a super-profitable show like House MD. Were certain people there misogynist? (See rumors that Robert Sean Leonard & Omar Epps did not have to take such a huge pay cut)
.
7) Is Fox, the TV network putting House on their schedule, the problem? Fox News is arch conservative and wouldn't have liked LE's political engagement re free choice. The fact that she tweets at the same time as the DS & LE pic about resisting another political attack against Planned Parenthood might not be totally coincidental. Still, Fox Entertainment broadcasts a lot of rather liberal programs so it's hard to see how this would matter all of a sudden: they are first of all concerned w. making money
.
Anyway, LE is telling us to let bygones be bygones: no good will come out of digging further, not for her nor anybody else. If we are sensible fans, we probably should respect her wishes, tempting though it may be to try to find out more. The truth is that we almost certainly will never find out what really happened as the different parties involved all have perfectly good reasons to not want to go there.
.
Cuddy is "dead," long live Celeste on the Good Wife!

House season 7 DVD featurettes

I finally gathered up my courage and sat down and started watching the H S7 DVD featurettes. I jot down my thoughts and include some twitter feedback. I only watched the 2 with Lisa Edelstein.

1) Huddy Dissected.

Besides the obvious issues I have w. what DS and KJ say and how it is contradicted by their own show, I was upset how seemingly fullheartedly Lisa Edelstein defended Bombshells (BS). It really didn't look to me as if she had any real issue with it. What came through for me was that in her own life too she doesn't typically have long-lasting relationships, so she felt this was inevitable, H & C breaking up. I found it galling how DS & KJ stress that they couldn't just break them up over H being a jerk/himself and then more or less proceeded to do exactly that. It does not compute. They have PJ very quickly and almost unintelligibly acknowledge that more fans wanted them together than apart, but that's it.

Everyone seems to talk about Huddy only up to BS even though a few scenes shown are from later—none from the final episode though. The question arises when this commentary's interviews were filmed: already before the filming of the finale? Before the gist of the finale, i.e., H crashing his car through C's house, was decided and/or known to the interviewees, at leads to the actors? That would explain a lot.

@Drdiagnostic

  • My impression is that this was filmed way b4 the finale.

  • As I'm thinking, it looks like LE was wearing what she was wearing FOR the break-up scene. Might have done comm. right after.

  • Remember 1 thing about LE. She is the master at PR & selling TPTB crap even if she dislikes it. *Lucas, cough*

@MystryGAB

  • It was my understanding the Huddy dissected was filmed before the finale, actaully several episodes before it.

2) Bombshells commentary (GY & Lisa E)

GY is so full of himself—what else is knew? The way he obsessively claims Huddy for himself is sickening because we all know how he didn't just kill it but then took a huge truck and double back over it in Moving On (season finale). He excessively compliments Lisa who of course deserves praise but he almost invalidates his praise by being so obsequious and inappropriate: X compliments Y to such an extreme extent that Y has no choice but to loooove X back on tape. It felt self-serving. Also, GY insisting how he wanted to start out the ep with a sweet, happy scene the better to contrast it with the ending: great job, asshole. The patient of the week story had to be straightforward, simply shot and presented to balance the extravagance of the dream sequences: you didn't succeed, GY. The end result still felt like a college film grad showing off his big budget with showy production numbers and neglecting the heart of the story, forgetting to make it plausible.

OK, so GY & Lisa mention Amber Tamblyn's last episode so this proves this commentary was definitely shot after ep 7x19 (Last Temptation) was filmed: when was that? This is potentially important. Lisa mentions during the zombie dream sequence that she came to the set to film the break-up scene but it was postponed and shot a month later. So it was written and ready but shot much later than the rest of the ep: why? Just plain logistics due to all the mayhem of the dream sequences? Or because it was rewritten? I lean toward the former. A bit later, Lisa does explain that the break-up was "fine-tuned" by the writers over the Christmas break. GY says that this postponement was decided upon at the time with HL & LE's input. Maybe one or both of them expressed reservations? GY says it was to shoot the scene more in the post-BS mode of Huddy being over… Hmmm...

Very Lisa was her complaint about aureolas not passing the censors (ep 7x01) but chopping off heads (7x15 zombie dream) was not problem at all. Not that she wanted to walk around with her nipples bare in 7x01, she said, but the principle of it. I totally agree with her… and, Lisa, perhaps you complaineth a bit too much about your nipples? ;-)  One more thing about the zombie sequence: they wasted a whole day on that? What a waste! I've got to say that GY does give the people involved in the technical side of the dream sequences a lot of well-deserved kudos, which is nice of him.

The Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid dream was of course lots of fun for Lisa to film, that's easy enough to comprehend. House kissing Cuddy before she goes under the knife: a Judas kiss from GY & DS. The dance dream, again, fabulous for Lisa to do, totally get that. Still, we are at the hospital, right after Cuddy comes out of it, H & C are talking and GY & Lisa are still going on and on about the dancers etc. This was an important scene for the real story supposedly underlying all this brouhaha! They totally skipped it, no comment. This proves my point that the story had become secondary, that they lost track of making the sudden break-up understandable. Look, we're at the patient of the week, now C with her sister and only now finally does the comment switch to what we see.

The break-up scene, C at home crying, H copying season 6 finale but he takes the vicodin. Heart-wrenching. It still destroys me. Shockingly enough, GY is more in tune with what I felt and still feel than Lisa is. He says this was the heart of the ep, devastating vs. Lisa saying this was inevitable, he can't be there for her, she's happy with the scene. And she finishes with more oohing and aching about the dancers. You disappoint me, Lisa! Et tu, Lisa?

  • To play devil's advocate, if TPTB insisted the inevitability and she had to accept it, she would need to feel good about how she performed it and the scene anatomy because the content was just something to resolve as a decision she couldn't fight
